I think I mentioned before about how I’ve been spoiling my puppy with all kinds of good things. Well, today is no exception. What can I say, I love my Ivy dog!

Making Nap Time Special

Ivy is not a little dog. Oh, she may think she is, but she’s a good 60 pounds. Despite the fact that this nap mat is more pillow-size for her, she still manages to plop as much of herself on it as she possibly can whenever she lays down for a bit. It’s kind of cute, really.

It’s yellow on one side and pink on the other. I keep the yellow side up (mostly) because it goes with our *ahem* decor. [we don't really have a decor, but it sounds impressive, doesn't it?]

Not that it really matters which side is up, they are both soft and lush. Oh yeah, nothing but the best for our spoiled puppy.

She also received a holiday penguin toy, but I had to trick her into giving it up. She is set on destroying all stuffed animals and this was way too cute to let her do that. I may give it back to her, maybe.

Dwayne made the comment recently that every day seems to be Christmas around here, since I get packages with all sorts of goodies from the mailman (yeah, mine’s a guy), FedEx, UPS, carrier pigeon. Okay, maybe carrier pigeon is a bit of an exaggeration.

I love the feel of the handle. It is comfortable and just the right size for my hand. Would be comfortable for long walks. And the leash itself is sturdy. I won’t be worried about this breaking or pulling apart. And the bags make it convenient for those times when I would need to pick up after her.

We live on 5+ acres, so Ivy can pretty much roam free and take care of her business without need of a leash. And for those instances when we do need to keep track of her we’ll continue to use one of the retractable leashes we have. But, this will be our official visit to the vet and road trip leash.

Friday night Ivy ate a whole batch of pizza dough. All it took was a few moments of distraction. A few moments of distraction led to a trip to the emergency vet, an overnight stay, and a bill of just over $450.

September is National Pet Health Insurance Month

September is nationally recognized as Pet Health Insurance month, and Kroger is inviting pet owners to learn more about policy options for their furry friends. This year marks the second annual celebration of the pet insurance month in the United States with pet insurance becoming more and more popular.

Vet care has increased significantly within the past few years. Pet owners can now seek treatment for their pets from dialysis to cancer treatments to surgeries, and pets are living longer than ever. But with the increased level of care comes an understandable increase in cost. According to the American Pet Products Association vet bills topped $11 billion across the nation in 2008.

Pet insurance is an option pet owners may want to consider. Pet insurance can allow owners to have coverage for the unexpected, and it can allow them to better budget for planned expenses. Some plans, such as the accident-only pet insurance plan covers treatment that results from an injury or accident, such as a car collision or unintentional ingestion. But with a more inclusive policy, pet owners can seek reimbursement for preventative care, such as teeth cleaning, flea control, annual exams and behavioral training. Pet insurance can provide peace of mind for pet owners, knowing they will not be stuck making a decision between proper care for their pet and possible “economic” euthanasia.

If you’re looking to benefit from obtaining a pet insurance policy, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

• Get the coverage you want. Take the time to review what policies are available. Some carriers, like Kroger and PetFirst Healthcare, offer accident-only coverage, which pet owners may find more attractive than a premium coverage plan which costs more per month. Pet owners should examine how much they’re willing to spend on the monthly premium and match that with the benefits of each plan.

• Buy early. Most, if not all pet insurance providers will refuse a pet with a pre-existing condition. Just like in humans, a pre-existing condition means the pet was diagnosed with an illness or disease prior to seeking pet insurance. It’s best to seek coverage from Day 1 to avoid the possibility of a pre-existing condition.

• Know your coverage. Not all treatments will be covered, and what’s covered varies from policy to policy. Because pet owners pay out-of-pocket and then file a claim for reimbursement, some pet owners may not know a treatment isn’t covered until their claim is denied. Avoid that scenario by knowing the coverage benefits before walking into a vet’s clinic.

National Kids and Pet Day is April 26th

As a family, we had talked about getting a pet for a number of years before actually going forward with choosing one. Just like any new addition to a family, a pet requires care, love, and visits to the doctor. Pets get sick, have accidents, and need their shots. I always say having a pet is like having another child. Well, I guess that really depends on the pet. I suppose a simple goldfish doesn’t cost all that much.

Family Friendly breeds:

• Cocker Spaniel – These lap dogs are sensitive and sweet and enjoy the attention of children. Cocker Spaniels are obedient with training and friendly around people.
• Pug – This affectionate breed loves being part of a family. Outgoing and mischievous, they make playful companions for children.
• Golden Retriever – Similar to Labs in personality, Goldens are mild mannered and enjoy being around families and other people. These dogs are easy to train are gentle with children.
• Basset Hound – This breed is good with children of all ages. They are known for their docile nature and gentleness. Their long backs need to be supported when they are picked up, and an eager child can accidentally injure them.

Our beautiful puppy is a hound/lab mix. This makes for some interesting times around our house. Ivy has the talkative nature of a lab with her gentle whimpers and outright barking when she wants something. She is also known to cuddle up under the covers and she snores. Then she has these beautiful markings showing she is part Blue Tick hound and the nose to the air or ground depending on what she happens to be tracking. Yes, she’s the best of both worlds.

Teach your children safe pet play:

• Teach children to pet softy, stay away from food dishes, toys and bones, and not to startle your dog or cat when it is sleeping.
• Keep babies and toddlers at a level higher than your dog. Dogs perceive height as representative of their hierarchy. Keep children off the floor when the dog is in the room.
• Don’t give your dog toys that resemble your children’s toys or clothing. Stay away from fabric stuffed dog toys that resemble your child’s stuffed animals.
• Involve your child in your dog’s care. Just the presence of your child in the same room while your dog is receiving his favorite things or activities can help build a positive association to children.

Ivy really loves tug toys and toys which dispense treats. An old tennis ball works well, too.

Remember, puppies are like toddlers they get into everything and need constant supervision. I haven’t raised any kittens, but am sure they are just as mischievous as puppies. Although, sometimes we think Ivy is part cat. She has 9 lives after all.

We adopted Ivy from the pound in August 2007. She was shy and scared and so cute. Oh, and she had parvovirus.  Ivy stayed overnight at the vet and this was our first big expense. Next came her first round of shots. Then there is heartworm pills and flea & tick prevention.

Our next big expense came on Superbowl Sunday, 2008. We took Ivy outside to do her business and when she came back inside she left bloody paw prints everywhere she walked. We bandaged her up and off we went to the emergency vet. A few hours later, and about a $100, Ivy was patched up and we were on our way home.

About a year later, on a pretty Saturday, Ivy was running free in the yard. We live on about 5 1/2 acres. We had gone inside. When we went outside to call her back in we found her lying by the back door. She had been hit by a car and limped there for us to find. Back to the emergency vet she went. This time she stayed overnight. Thankfully no major damage had been done.

We think she is part dog, part cat, and part people. She was napping [and snoring] when I looked over to find her. She woke up at my movement, but as you can see, she didn’t seem too phased by it.

Last night she was being cradled like a baby by Dwayne. You would think she thinks herself a person. And she does this a lot! She jumps into our chairs at the dinner table [when we get up for a moment] as if to say she’s ready to join us.

She is also a bed hog in a major way! She will fight me for my pillow. Oh, and she rests her head on it just like a person would.

My parents didn’t allow us to have a dog growing up so I don’t know if this is normal behavior.Not that I would want her any other way, I just think she’s a bit odd. Maybe that’s why she chose us!

When you do not have a job there is very little to differentiate between weekends and weekdays.  The kids are home and I do not have to inadvertently hear Kathy Lee Gifford.  Does that count?  Okay, I do not hate, period.  No reason for that.  But I do have some things that grate on me.  Kathy Lee Gifford grates on me.  I feel she has corrupted Hoda Kotb as well.  I try my best to either change the channel or turn off the television before the 10:00 am Today Show comes on just to avoid their annoyance.  They are almost as bad as The View.  But, many have friended them on Facebook, so I must be in the minority on this.  Just as well. 

On to my weekend.  Let us see.  School, laundry, cook, clean, blog, play with the dog, entertain the kids, watch a little television, listen to some music, exercise (I am really bad about this!), and so on and so forth.  I did have a good mail day on Saturday.  The cookbook I won from Silk arrived and my free sample of Cream of Wheat.  Earlier in the week I received a sample of Huggies wipes.  Just because my kids are older does not mean they do not get messy.  Oh, and a coupon for a free up to $9.50 Touch of Gray Just For Men hair color (not pictured).  Funny thing is, my DH does not have enough hair to warrant needing a touch of anything.
