March is the time for new beginnings
Short little story, really.
When I married the kids’ father back on March 16, 1991 we [he] chose March for two reasons: 1) I was pregnant and he did not want Megan to be born out of wedlock and 2) not a whole lot happened in March [only his mom's birthday]. Needless to say, Amanda was born on March 12 and Stephen on March 21. So much for it not being a busy month.
We are no longer married, but not because of that.
And it just gets better.
I still have the two birthdays in March. No anniversary. Yet, not wanting to deviate too much from the festivities, I meet Dwayne who happens to have been born on March 17th! Gotta love it!
Here is how we celebrated this year.
First up – Amanda
Since I [we] buy for the kids all year long, holidays and birthdays are not big gifting days. Instead, we make a special meal and eat cake. Amanda didn’t have a preference for dinner this year and it was Friday, so I made homemade pizza, with homemade [from scratch] garlic bread and a white cake with vanilla frosting for dessert.
Birthday #2 – Dwayne
Dwayne is Scotch/Irish and the gods were smiling on him when he was born on St. Patrick’s Day all those many years ago. We always have Corned Beef and Cabbage with boiled potatoes for his birthday. I also made a devils food cake [bundt style] with green vanilla frosting for dessert. If he could have he would have married that corned beef dinner. It was love at first smell, taste, and every bite afterward.
Last but not least – Stephen
Stephen didn’t have a preference for dinner so I made a gorgeous roast that Dwayne had picked up from the local Minute Market. We guess this is local beef, but don’t know for certain. I cooked this in my slow cooker all day with carrots, celery, onions, and mashed potatoes on the side. He did request a peanut butter ice cream pie for his dessert. I’ll be sure to post the recipe later this week. It’s pretty good and super simple to make.
I didn’t feel icing would taste good on this, so I just stuck in a few random candles.
Do you have a month full of birthdays?

@Ms. Freeman, I used to think us September babies were the greater numbers, but I’m finding that March is a a big birth month, too. Must be all of those June weddings! Happy Birthday!

I am working on our 2009 photo album – we print one out at the end of each year, and yes, it’s taking me time… I just finished doing the birthdays. We don’t really do cakes or anything for adults, but we do for the kids of course. Each kid get two cakes, one for school and one for the party we throw at home. The school cakes are just chocolate cakes with lots of frosting and various toppings. For the home parties, we had cakes according to the party theme.
Dan had a Desert Island/Survivor party so I made this island cake with jungle trees and animals on it, surrounded by blue frosting for the ocean with candy sharks in it. Ron had a science-themed party, so I decorated the cake in the shape of this lab glass thing with bluish liquid in side, bubbles all over and even a chemical formula next to it. Birthday cakes are fun!

Hope everyone enjoyed their birthday celebrations, I am so hungry after seeing all the yummy meals and cakes!
April & November are busy birthday months for us. My oldest daughter is born on the same day as my father-in-law. What you do for one you must do for the other, so my 2nd daughter is born on the same day as my dad! To make it even more interesting, they sometimes fall on Thanksgiving. I got so behind this year we didn’t have birthday parties until December:)

@Liz @ Sweetwater Savings, Hey, Liz! That is amazing how your daughters were born on their grandfathers’ birthdays. I have a cousin who shares a birthday with our grandmother [in November no less]. We try to celebrate on the day, but weekends work if time is against us. We don’t do parties as they don’t seem to work, but we do gather for food and cake!
Megan [who is at college] even Skyped cake for Dwayne’s birthday, so no one missed out on the festivities.
