Chickens!

Around here chicken is a word that makes us smile.

There is a story after all.

When we moved to Virginia in late Spring 2002 the kids were still quite young. Megan was not quite 11 and Amanda and Stephen had just turned 9 and 6, respectively. They grow up so fast.

I would make dinner most nights [still do]. Yes, we are one of those strange families that eats dinner together every night. Now you would think it would be pretty easy to tell the difference between meatloaf, spaghetti, and a ham dinner [a family favorite]. Yet, every night without fail Stephen or Amanda and sometimes Megan would walk into the kitchen and ask, “What’s for dinner?”

At first the answer was whatever I was truly making. After a few nights the smartass in me took over. No matter what I was making, and especially if it was obvious, the answer was, “Chicken”. This led to any question deemed silly to garner an answer of chicken.

Given that we are easily amused, these responses would be answered with a chuckle and a “No, really mom”. This eventually led to chicken being one of those family ‘inside’ jokes.

I never said it was a good story.

Our favorite Super Bowl commercial

And it’s no wonder.

Oh, the funniest part, the chicken in space!

This offer is good Tuesday.
If you are daring enough to brave the crowds.

Ah, chickens are coming up front and center these days. A code, a family joke that can only stir up gales of laughter every time it’s invoked. Evey family needs a smartass mom no doubt.

@jan geronimo, The problem with having a smartass mom is we tend to raise smartass children. Amanda is quick to remind me [big smile on her face] I made her that way. Yet, all the laughter among us is well worth it.

Hey, kudos on eating dinner together – we make a point of doing the same here. And my kids are the same with “What’s for dinner” ll

@Anne Moss, Periodically they run campaigns stressing the importance of eating dinner as a family. I just wish they would show teenagers as well as younger kids.

Having dinner together has really brought us closer as a family. I’m not sure I would have the relationships with my children without all of those meals spent together.

@Heather Kephart, Ha Ha! :) We’re so simple around here that anytime we see or hear chicken we point and laugh, even if it’s not funny. I even downloaded a South Park ring tone of Cartman saying “Gimme Chicken”. It’s a good life.
