The Beauty of Winter

The ice and snow does some interesting things to trees. It’s still coming down here in Southwestern Virginia and the power flickered a couple of times during the night. Here is what greeted me this fine winter morning.

The tops of the evergreens to the west of our house

These first caught my eye as I looked out the kitchen window. I grabbed my camera and ran [read walked fast] down to the basement to take some shots.

Full shot of the evergreens

Check out the tomato cages still in the garden. I suppose I should have done something with those before now.

Willow tree out back

As I turned to get just the right shot I noticed the willow tree perfectly crystallized. Intriguing.

And the rather large bush by the road

To me this looks like a sea urchin. What do you think?

Later I’ll take a walk out back and see if there are any great shots not viewable from the comfort and warmth of the house. Now to go finish the cup of coffee sitting on the table waiting patiently for me.

    Hi Anne
    I’ve always enjoyed winter.
I remember as a child going out when it was snowing and being so excited – snow is like some sort of magic.
As an adult I’ve done a lot of skiing in the Alps and waking up after a heavy fall of snow and seeing the trees just like your photos, is amazing.

That is so beautiful! It’s actually cold here in Israel now, but only snows in the far north (Golan Heights).

@Anne Moss, After spending most of my life in perpetual Spring/Summer it’s a nice change to see the snow and how it plays across nature.

@Keith Davis, Anytime, Keith. I really enjoyed your opening story. It’s a great reminder that just because something looks like it comes easy to someone doesn’t mean it always did.

Nice images there, Anne. What’s funny about the storm most of you experienced yesterday is that it was the one day where we didn’t get a single bit of snow. The sun was out all day here, and he usually snows at least a little bit every day. For instance, it’s lightly snowing today, which I assume means it’s probably stopped snowing where you are. Go figure.

@Mitch, That’s interesting, Mitch. I was surprised when my aunt in NJ said she didn’t get any snow either. We’re expecting more later in the week so you should get another reprieve. :) Now to listen as it slides off the metal roof. Not quite the same effect as rain.

Beautiful pix Anne. I probably would have finished the coffee first. That shows dedication to photography. I love the way it feels so open. Don’t you love the silence of snow? The other day I opened the window and asked my husband to listen to the snow. It’s stunningly quiet and beautiful, isn’t it? What I love about living in Italy are the four distinct seasons. I drive by the same fields on my way to work and one day the are white, one day, green, one day red and one day brown. It’s a beautiful thing to witness.

    Thanks for sharing. Julie

    @Julie at jbulie’s blog, Thank you, Julie. I’m notoriously bad about getting a cup of coffee, putting it on the table, then forgetting all about it. It’s almost always cold by the time I return. {sigh}

I do love the snow. As tired as I am of feeling cooped up in the house I keep reminding myself this doesn’t happen every year. Some years we’re lucky to get a flurry or two. My favorite season is fall when the leaves change to all the pretty warm earth tones. But, it is all very different than growing up in South Florida where there are two seasons: Summer & Spring.

@Extreme John, It’s prettier since we don’t get winters like this every year. They reported on the news last night that this time last year we were outside in t-shirts. I’m going to enjoy it while it’s here.
