As I was cooking dinner the other night I had a rather unimportant, somewhat self-indulgent thought.
At what age should a woman
no longer have hair that
falls half-way down her back?
Don’t give me that look. You were warned.
As a child I had really long hair, until my mother gave me a bowl cut. Oh, yes. Not with an actual bowl mind you. My mother used old pantyhose.
I swear I looked like a boy.
A boy on a pink bike, no less.
And the cycle begins.
I would go through a period of long and short [very, very short] hair. I even cut my bangs myself – not recommended. Now I forgo any semblance of bangs.
It’s a vicious cycle when you think about the number of times I would get so frustrated with my hair. I would go to the nearest salon and just cut it all off! Then I would have second thoughts. Oops. It’s a little too late for that.
Then there was the time I decided I wanted to curl my hair. That was the summer of 1986. Not sure what happened, but my hair has never been the same.
I have dark brown hair. Hmm, and lots of gray mixed in there, too.
I used to dye it all shades of red.
I tried black once and looked like Morticia from The Addams Family. Even with a tan I looked pale.
I tried blond once and it turned this odd shade of orange. I was so afraid it would turn green or fall out if I dyed it again too soon so I left it that way for two whole weeks!
Now I dye my hair dark brown to match what should be my natural hair color. Well, I dye it when I get around to it. Let’s just say it’s been awhile.
Stephen: Mom, you know, from a certain angle it looks like you have a lot of gray hair.
Me: {snickers} Angle, hell! I do have a lot of gray hair.
Stephen: {gets a closer look} Mom, you’re old!
And this is a metaphor for…
life? Seems a bit simple.
frustration? Getting closer, possibly.
boredom? Another good thought.
transition? Ah, I like that one. Change and transition. Constant motion. Spinning wheels. Finding direction.
Or maybe I just have not found the right hairstyle.
Sometimes I consider cutting it really short. Then again, I love the way my hair feels as it falls against my skin.
What do you think?
Is there an age when a woman should consider a shorter [possibly more appropriate] hairstyle?
Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
My hair

Short hair looks great on women who are in transition. Or when they reach that stage when people start complimenting them for for looking “elegant.” But what do I know, right? Kids can be great consultants and can be relied upon to tell what looks good on their mom.

@jan geronimo, It’s like so many things in life, when we don’t get around to them in our younger years we try to accomplish them when we get older. I now have the patience that I did not have in my youth. My girls tell me to keep it long. Maybe I should listen to them.

No.
If you’re comfortable with the length of your hair, that’s all that matters. Nobody else’s opinion matters.

@Dave Doolin, Seems a bit self-centered to wonder about the length of my hair with so much more important going on in the world. Yet, sometimes these things warrant contemplation. I’m keeping it long since I like it, but did dig out a box of hair dye. All this gray is making me look my age!

Man, I used to get the hots for Morticia! Have you got any photos that I could drool over
As to what you should do with your hair? Whatever you want as long as your able to live with your decision. I personally like women with longer hair, but don’t let that sway your decision.

@Sire, Wow! I don’t think I have any pictures of me from that time. I was 17 or 18 at the time. But, I’m sure I could scare up some shots of Morticia for you.
Many men like long hair. My husband prefers it short and neat. Seeing as my hair is long and unruly just shows how much of a pain in the ass I can be. Then again, he did start dating me during my two-week orange hair fiasco.

@Anne, I think it all depends on the style Anne, when it comes to short hair I mean. As to Morticia, I have other favorites now.

@Sire, Just as long as it’s not Nicole Kidman. She’s starting to suffer from that plastic look so many celebrities have these days. Such a shame.

I have often thought about this myself. When I was in the army, I noticed women officers almost always have short hair once they reach the rank of major. Weird, but it was almost a gradual thing – haircut getting shorter as you go up in rank. I had a feminine short haircut when I was a captain and then I left.
I grew my hair after that, but had to go back to short after each childbirth. Practical reasons
It’s long again now!

@Anne Moss, I notice a lot of women in the military wear their hair short. I figure it was similar to the men having to shave their heads just not as extreme.
