UPDATE: I’m an idiot. Sorry to oDesk, your program was not an issue.
This was user error at its finest. {slap forehead and says – duh-huh!}
The upside? Now I know how to fix this issue if it were to ever come up again.
Boy, I sure hope that came across as intended
In an attempt to find an outlet for making a little moo-lah, I signed up with oDesk. This gets good reviews by some. I cannot attest to their service and I may be the only one with an issue. I am not badmouthing them, but am a bit disenchanted with what downloading their program did to my MacBook. Your results may vary. See my update above.
An Ode to My MacBook’s Display
oDesk you seemed so inviting
With your promise of possible income
Yet, you have left me crying [not really]
My MacBook is sick and glum [that rhymes]
I signed up with a skip in my step
Downloaded you with nary a thought
My heart is now filled with regret [you saw that coming, didn't you?]
Just take a look at this screen shot!
the blurry lines are from my camera, it's the colors that are screwed up - this is how it looks set to 'Millions' not '256'
I removed your program real quick
Hoping that would resolve my issue
Yeah, that didn’t work worth a sh*t
To my old display how I miss you {sigh}
I sit here with 256 colors, how droll
Missing my Millions with such shine
My MacBook is no longer whole
And I am trying very hard to not whine [and failing miserably!]
Now come to find I’m the cause for this mess
A simple mistake after all
oDesk was innocent and I must confess
My contrast on maximum, instead of normal [duh!]

PS. Sorry, Heather, but when the muse hits you have to go with it. No more posts today, promise

Gee Anne, how dumb do you feel right now
Still, it wasn’t a total loss, at least now we all know that even some women are prone to mistakes and willing to admit to it.
As to this oDesk. What is it, as this is the first time I’ve come across it.

@Sire, I admit to many mistakes. I make them all the time. Good thing too or else I would never learn anything.
Check out Gem’s write up about it to find out more.

@Anne, You just made another mistake Anne, you forgot the second part of my comment. Is that selective reading because if it was I thought that was something we men were prone to do.

@Sire, I think you are the one with selective reading. I pointed you to Gem’s page to find out more about oDesk – I just wasn’t very clear.
And women don’t practice selective reading or hearing, we just ignore it.

@Rose, Thanks, Rose. I’m more embarrassed than anything. And since I tend to beat myself up about such things I figured I would just rip off the band-aid and get the flogging over with in one fell swoop.

Anne, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I think you’re my soul sister! I do stuff like this all the time. Just ask my husband. One second the world is coming to an end, the good Lord above despises me and has chosen me for his personal chew toy, yadda yadda yadda, then I realize I didn’t plug something in.
You’re like who I would be if I liked humanity! Can you imagine? lol Just kidding. I really do like humanity. Certain aspects of it just have me scratching my head from time to time. So much potential there, ya know? It’s why I like Star Trek.
But I DIGRESS. Thank you for the mention! It’s not your fault I’ve fallen behind in my commenting. Oops, yes it is! Heh. But that’s a-ok with me!
P.S. Thanks for “being there” for me. xo
P.P.S. OMG Sire is so mean! Don’t you want to just smack him across the face with a fuzzy slipper sometimes?!?
P.P.P.S. I have no clue what oDesk is. But, like you, I’m always looking for ways to make dinero! Have you done any Mahaloing per DiTesco’s suggestion?

@Heather Kephart, Let’s see. I love Start Trek! And I’m always wondering what is wrong with humanity that it can be so wonderful and so awful at the same time.
As I was in the shower I was thinking [big surprise there] and it’s amazing how nuts I get when something goes amiss with my computer, but one of my kids has blood pouring from their face [this has happened to all three of them at some point] and I just calmly attend to business. Maybe it’s because I can’t afford to panic when it’s one of the kids. Hmmm
I should have my daughter create a video game [she can do that] using his avatar image up there and fuzzy slippers hitting him the face. – In fact, I just asked her about it and she’s smiling that
evilthoughtful smile of hers. {rubs hands together while cackling}oDesk looks to be kind of interesting. Gem works with them. I reinstalled the program [no problems this time] and will spend some time in the upcoming weeks perusing the work listed. I need to get a bit more active with Mahalo, too.
ps. I received the email from Jena. Good one.

@Heather Kephart, Pointing me to her post on computer specs. Or maybe she just cleverly led me to believe you were behind it. Hmmm.
Yep, all so simple once the tiny glitch is figured out. Like most things computer.
And hey, did you have any particular melody in mind with that excellent rhyming rant? If so I’ll come back and sing it next time.

@Jannie Funster, My daughter [Megan, music ed major] says that first you write the words, then comes the music. Although I have sort of a sing-song lilt to my thought I am most surely open to those with more musical ability than I [which is practically everyone].

Yikes, it’s times like that when I like to just get up and walk away from the pc before I write something I may need to update. LOL

@Ms. Freeman, I must have been trying to figure this out for 4 hours at that point. I walked away and came back. I prayed. I finally hooked it up to my tv which seemed to fix it, but then it returned. Then some awesome and wonderful person on the tech site realized what my problem was and I was so grateful. Yeah, next time I’ll give it a day before posting anything.

Personally I think oDesk’s (and Elance’s) user interfaces suck royale.
Having designed UIs, I know it’s tough. But I don’t blame my design mistakes on the customer.
A former sub of mine and I had to drop elance for everything because their interface was so bad. We just used them for invoicing. Which was probably outside their terms of service, but they still got their money.
Most web apps, most apps, have crappy UIs. This is not the user’s fault.

@Dave Doolin, I haven’t gotten that far into it yet. It looked interesting, but I don’t think I’ll get paid what I’m worth [for the bookkeeping aspects that is].
Are you a Unix guy? I hear they dislike most software, OS’, etc, etc. I dated a software engineer for a few years and he would talk about the isms of his co-workers. And I distinctly remember him saying Unix guys were a unique breed. No offense meant.

I’m definitely in the unix camp, sans grey beard, pony tail and bitter cynicism.
At this point, there’s only unix derivatives and Windows that matter, and MS has been trying very hard for a decade to reinvent unix without inventing unix. Stupid in my opinion, but they have the luxury of being stupid. MS should have adopted BSD 15 years ago. But what do I know? =)
