Did you know that ready-to-eat cereal eaters consume less fat, less cholesterol and more fiber than non-cereal eaters? Cereals also deliver important vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients, making cereal a top source of key nutrients in children’s diets.
Other cereal benefits:
- Ready-to-eat cereals, including presweetened cereals, account for only 5% of sugar in children’s diets.
- Ready-to-eat cereal is the No. 1 source of whole grains in a child’s diet today.
- More frequent cereal eaters tend to have healthier body weights and lower Body Mass Index measures.
Studies also demonstrate the benefits of eating breakfast. A 1998 study showed that children who eat breakfast tend to perform better at school. Compared to children who skip breakfast, children who eat breakfast score higher on tests, are less likely to miss class or be tardy, have fewer reported discipline problems, and make fewer trips to the office.

In our house it is not uncommon to see a lot of cereal. It’s great when your kids [and husband] love the non-sugary kiddie cereals. But, let’s face it, every now and then we want those little marshmallow thingys, too. I think it’s wonderful that General Mills recognizes this and has made a commitment to reduce the amount of sugar added to single digit grams per serving in cereals marketed to kids under 12 years of age. In addition to less sugar, General Mills is adding more of the good stuff like calcium & Vitamin D. And what parent doesn’t love knowing there is good stuff in what their kids are eating?

It’s nice to see a major brand stepping up to make a commitment to something a little healthier for kids to consume for breakfast.

Breakfast is definitely my favorite meal of the day.
Lately I’ve been making my own though… “Porridge al Dente” Steel cut oats, flax and millet.
Milk doesn’t agree with my anymore, but I do like cereal mixed into yogurt. I’ll put that on my list this week.

@Dave Doolin, I have a recipe somewhere for homemade granola. I like putting that in my yogurt, but I really need to switch to Greek yogurt as it’s better for you. I prefer soy milk over regular. And if I’m treating myself I buy some almond milk. I don’t know how healthy it is, but it tastes really good.
