Sledding, Bunny Tracks, & Lost Roosters or What I Did On My Winter Vacation

I know when we grow up we are supposed to dread the snow. We curse its existence. How dare it prevent us from going and doing what we want to do.

Hold the phone!

Amanda in the snowDo we want to go to work? Do we really want to go to the mall and shop? Maybe we do want to get home from our trip, but do we really? Or are these just programmed responses dictated by society?

The media advised us to not go out this weekend as the roads were still dangerous. The malls did not open until noon. Many stores did not open at all on Saturday, though. I commend Old Navy, Victoria’s Secret, Bath & Body Works, Aeropostle, American Eagle and any other store that took into consideration their employees and decided to not open Saturday [in Roanoke and anywhere else in the path of the storm]. Still, several people determined to go shopping were there and quite disappointed. Maybe this was a blessing in disguise. Wants vs. needs people.

That’s heavy, man!

I have worked through five winters since being in Virginia. We don’t get that much snow on our side of the Blue Ridge [I'm just east]. So no, I did not want to go to work or shopping or anything else when it snowed. This was the time to spend with the kids sliding down the hill in our backyard and making snow angels when we would collapse from all the hiking up the hill.

After spending twenty-some odd years in South Florida I tend to really enjoy all of the changes in the seasons. Oh, and I still remember sledding down the hill when I was wee little. The last winter I spent in New Jersey was when I was 6 years old!

Trivia

The first winter in Virginia we did not have sleds. We used the sides of moving boxes covered with heavy duty trash bags. The kids still talk about it as being the most fun we ever had sledding.

My Video Diary

This looks so much better in best quality on my laptop. Note the bunny tracks ~ really cute ~ and the rooster guarding the tree. I had to gather Mr. Rooster and carry him back to the coop. We think he may have gotten a bit disoriented due to the snow. Oh, and since no one would take pictures I had to get a little creative at the end. Enjoy! :D

Note: All images are of our property. The old worn-down house is an old schoolhouse. One day I would love to restore this and make it a library, but it needs a lot of work and $$$. Ivy had a blast running through the property and chasing us down the hill when we were sledding.

@Tracey, Yeah, he was stranded out there in the snow by the tree. I carried him back to the coop. As soon as I put him down inside the chicken door the other chickens started clucking at him. ‘Where were you?’ And he probably told them all about his grand adventure in the snow and how he let the ‘big human female’ carry him home. ;)

Anne, this made my morning! The song was just perfect (I love that old fashioned holiday music), and the snow… Joe pointed at the screen and said, I kid you not, “That is where Santa is from!”

That old schoolhouse is so awesome, I love where you live! I’m a country girl at heart. What a change in lifestyle your home must have been for you after Florida. Your family and that silly dog are adorable! Thanks for posting that.

@Heather Kephart, I had so much fun putting that video together, too. I showed Amanda and we just cracked up, especially at my goofy little thumbs up at the end. When we moved we did so with the intention of being more of a family [together] and we have definitely accomplished that. I miss Florida, but don’t regret the time I have with the kids. Glad you enjoyed it. :)

Was that Nat King Cole singing? I can’t quite place the voice, nice deep tone.

Still chuckling about the escaped rooster, he is so cute!!

Enjoy all the snow and your beautiful property. You’re a long way from Florida now, Toto!! :)

@Jannie Funster, Bing Crosby was the deep voice behind the music. :) I love those old songs and old crooners. Thanks for stopping by and hope to see more of you [uh, well, not more of you more of you, but more of your presence here and in the group] eh, you know what I mean. lol ;)

@Extreme John, Glad you enjoyed it. :) We did some more sledding on Christmas Eve. The camera wasn’t rolling for Megan’s face plant in the snow, but I swear we all laughed for a good five minutes. That could have totally been the $10,000 AFV winner. Oh, well. :D

Cool, I’ve never heard that version of the song. Sledding looks like fun, I reckon I’ll have to give that a try one day before I get too old. Thanks for the slide show Anne.

@Sire, It’s a ton of fun! I missed doing a header into a tree by inches [good thing my feet caught the ground in time to stop me]. lol Hopefully we’ll take the boat our this summer and get some shots of us in the tube flying along the lake. Almost as much fun as the sledding. ;)

@Anne, OK, but is it possible to get something on a movie, that could prove to be quite amusing.
