Waiting for a Phone Call

tn_telephone-classicNo one likes to wait, especially when it is their future well-being at stake.  I have been waiting for two months now so a few more days should be nothing, right?  It has been a week since my interview.  I play it back in my head and it is the first interview I can recall that I am not kicking myself for something stupid I said or did.  In fact, it seemed like we connected so well.  First, one of their biggest clients happens to be my college.  What are the odds of two people in a small rural town having a connection like this?  My college is in another state and I attend online, so it would be a unique situation.  And, the husband met one of my favorite authors and has some of her books, autographed.

It was not just those things though.  I genuinely seemed to answer their questions well.  I did not stumble or stutter.  I thought through my answers and replied honestly.  Not that I reply dishonestly in other interviews.  This just seemed easy.  No pressure, no worrying.  It felt right.  Then there was the connection with one of their existing employees.  It seems we attended the same school field trip a few years back; he works for the school, I went with my daughter.  Not to mention the proximity of the employer to my home.  There are almost no jobs out where I live.  Maybe it is too perfect.  Is there such a thing?

I want this position.  And I will be disappointed if I do not get it.  So, for now I wait.  Wait for the phone to ring. Or wait for the rejection letter to arrive. For now it is all about the wait.  And patience was never my strength.  Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock.

I know exactly how you feel. I had the same experience with an interview yesterday, and I am waiting for the call now. It was the best interview I had ever been through. The weird part was, this was the second interview and the interviewer from the first round was there along with a couple other people. In the first round, the interviewer was a little hard to read but we seemed to hit it off okay. On this interview, it seemed a little more like a good/bad cop situation. The new people were very nice, but original interviewer didn’t say much. Maybe I’m looking into it a little too much, but his first question was how is the job search going. That seemed like an odd question, almost like like trying to see what else I had lined up. As we were leaving, I told him I was anxious for the position (possible mistake) and he said…well, you made it farther than most people….also seemed a little weird. Maybe it was nothing but who knows. good luck though.

Thank you, Jeff. I am not holding out too much hope anymore. Two weeks have passed and they spoke of a working interview and wanting to hire someone by the end of January. I am thinking this was not the right open door and there will be another.

Try not to over think it. That will drive you crazy. During my second interview for my last employer they asked if I had anything else to add. I responded with “this is my job”. I did get the job, but left the interview wondering if I came off too needy or self-righteous. So there really is no wrong answer. Good luck to you.
